Alpena, MI

Alpena, MI

Often known as the “Sunrise Side,” Alpena is also considered the sanctuary of the Great Lakes for its sheltered Thunder Bay and carefree northeast Michigan lifestyle. Many visitors will skip this stop due to its lengthy sail in from Lake Huron but it is a worthwhile time for anyone looking for a unique getaway or refuge from a storm. Alpena offers multiple scenic city parks, sandy beaches and nature trails. Walking the pier surrounding the marina offers an enjoyable view of the bay and tranquil nature views along the Thunder Bay River. Cute shops line Chisholm St. and great dining options are available for any option you may be craving.

A Farmers' Market is held on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. near Bay View Park  at 1302 S. State St. (Market moves inside in October.) One Saturday in September the market takes on a carnival-like atmosphere as it fills with families with children.

Another popular event in Alpena is the 10-day Michigan Brown Trout Festival held in July. This is the longest running fishing tournament in the Great Lakes. The first event was in 1975 and it continues to attract a crowd.
