The stretch from Houma to Morgan City, often regarded as the most scenic section of the Louisiana GIWW, offers cruisers a journey lined with majestic cypress trees, Spanish moss, and a chance to spot bald eagles and black bears. This picturesque route provides a serene escape into nature's wonders.

Navigation Notes

  • Caution: Cruisers should be vigilant from GIWW Mile 65 WHL to 75 WHL for submerged pilings, especially around Mile 74 WHL, where Lake Hackberry lies to the north. Additionally, beware of non-native water hyacinths in summer, hiding potential floating debris. A cable ferry near Bayou Boeuf Lock at Mile 94.3 WHL requires extra vigilance. Ensure the cable is clear before proceeding.
  • Bayou Boeuf Lock: At GIWW Mile 93, contact Bayou Boeuf Lock via VHF Channel 14 or phone. With timbered walls and sparse cleats, prepare with ample lines and vertical fenders. Exiting the locks requires coordination with Berwick Traffic on VHF Channel 11.
  • Alternate Route - Bayou Chene: Bayou Chene serves as an alternate route during lock repairs, providing a scenic detour through the Atchafalaya Basin's untouched swamplands. This bypass not only adds beauty to the journey but also immerses cruisers in the rich ecological tapestry of the state.

Dockage & Anchorage

  • Bayou Black Anchorage: Just east of Mile 84 WHL, this tranquil spot offers depths of 8 feet or more. For safety, display a bright anchor light and consider a stern line to shore.
  • Morgan City Boat Dock: Before the U.S. 90 Bridge on Berwick Bay's east side, offering large vessel accommodation with basic amenities. Nearby, the city provides access to a post office, library, and dining options.
  • Berwick Town Dock: On the river's west side, offering free dockage with no amenities but located near essential services for cruising needs.

Nearby Morgan City & Berwick

Morgan City boasts a vibrant waterfront with more than a thousand fishing boats calling it home, protected by a concrete seawall against floods. Directly across, Berwick offers a glimpse into the area's maritime heritage with its historic red lighthouse. Both cities serve as gateways to the Atchafalaya Basin, inviting exploration of one of the nation's largest natural water systems and its ample recreational offerings.
