Experience the beauty and adventure of Lake Michigan's eastern shore. This cruising area offers plenty of anchorages, big sandy beaches with towering dunes and access to inland lakes, along with interesting resort towns to shop and explore. There are safe, interesting harbors every 20 miles or so, which allows short days for the cruiser who is not in a hurry.

Lake Michigan is the second largest Great Lake at 22,300 square miles and boasts some of the bluest water north of the Caribbean, although it barely reaches 75 degrees. The lake has a well-deserved reputation for offering some of the most rewarding cruising, while also having some of the most frustrating conditions. The lake varies considerably from north to south with the north being colder and less populated and the southern end housing over one-fifth of the Great Lakes basin's human population.

Controlling Factors

Weather: Cruising south along Lake Michigan's eastern side may expose boaters to higher winds and waves compared to the Wisconsin side, due to weather fronts moving across the lake. Extended stays in Michigan ports are often necessary because of these conditions. The transition from summer to autumn can bring unstable weather, with the clash of warm and cold fronts creating challenging beam winds and large waves along the lake's lengthy coastline. Boaters are advised to choose their travel days cautiously and secure their boats properly as wind speeds approach 20 knots.

Water Levels: Boaters in the Great Lakes should be mindful of annual water level fluctuations when nearing shorelines and harbors. Regular updates on these changes are broadcast via VHF radio. Despite the lack of tides in the Great Lakes, variations in wind and atmospheric pressure can significantly alter water levels. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers provides weekly updates on water levels and forecasts water currents, accessible through VHF radio broadcasts. Generally, water depths in the Great Lakes change gradually due to their non-tidal nature.

Dockage

The State of Michigan maintains a list of more than 80 harbors and marinas administered by state, county and local governments. although most of these facilities operate on a first-come, first-served basis, boaters can make reservations at some of these marinas up to 6 months in advance online (for a fee) at Michigan Department of Natural Resources or by calling toll free 800-44-PARKS. Stays are limited to four days but extensions are granted if dockage is available.

Activities and Considerations

  • Fishing and Diving: The lake's rich fish populations and numerous wreck sites provide ample opportunities for anglers and divers, though precautions against invasive species are essential.
  • Time Zone Transition: Cruisers should note the shift from Eastern to Central Time Zone when planning their journey across Lake Michigan.

Lake Michigan is a prime destination for cruisers seeking both adventure and relaxation. With careful planning and respect for the lake's conditions, cruisers can enjoy a memorable journey along this stunning shoreline.

The north west side of Michigan, east side of Lake Michigan, say Ludington north is the most beautiful freshwater cruising ground I have found in my 7 decades of boating. Summer that is, but I am a warm weather, warm water sailor from Florida.
