In 1874 Congress authorized the construction of the largest man-made freshwater port in the Great Lakes as a safe refuge for shallow-draft lake freighters. The town later became known as Harbor Beach.

To learn more history about the area, visit the Grice House Museum (989-479-6477) and Frank Murphy Memorial Museum (989-479-6477). You can also check out the Harbor Beach Lighthouse (commonly known as the “sparkplug lighthouse” due to its shape).
