Norfolk Southern #V6.8 Bridge: Bridge maintenance work will be performed on the Norfolk Southern #V6.8 (Old Virginian / Norfolk & Western) Railroad Bridge at mile 3.6 over the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River. The bridge will be maintained in the closed-to-navigation position as follows:
- Saturday, September 26th at 7 am through Monday, September 28th at 7 pm.
Maintenance will be performed 24 hours/day and a broadcast notice to mariners will be issued when the bridge is returned to operation upon completion of the closure period. The final day of each closure period is included as a contingency day.
With the drawbridge's vertical clearance of 10 ft in the closed position, most marine traffic will be unable to safely pass under the bridge during the closure. Any boats that can safely pass under the drawbridge in the closed position may continue to do so.
This closure will affect vessels heading to and from the Albemarle & Chesapeake Canal/Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The bridge will not be able to open for emergencies and there is no immediate alternate route for vessels unable to pass through the bridge in the closed position.
