Waterway Guide was not able to participate in the Corps conference call on 2/28. The following update is courtesy of AGLCA.
The large capacity crane is expected to arrive tomorrow at the Demopolis Lock so the removal of the larger sections of concrete can begin. Divers have been in the water today doing some drilling to secure pins that will assist the crane operation. Divers are also continuing to remove smaller debris and do silt clean-up. Officials will be taking a trip to the concrete testing lab next week. Results from the work being done at the testing lab should be available during the first week in March so they can finalize the repair plan. At that time, officials should have a better idea about the opening schedule for May. Currently, they have obligated $19-20 million for the project by re-prioritizing the 2023 budget so they do not anticipate any funds to be impacted by a potential government shutdown in the near future.
2/23/2024:
Waterway Guide participated in the Corps conference call Wednesday of this week and work continues on schedule. Large amounts of concrete from the sill collapse have been discovred on the lock floor. These are too massive for the exisitng equipment on site to lift so a larger crane is in transit to the lock. Final repair plans are still being formulated. Various work is ongoing 24/7.
1/30/2024:
Waterway Guide participated in a conference call January 30. Plans for repair have been formulated and contracts are being awarded. Details to follow but LOCK WILL BE CLOSED UNTIL MAY.

Waterway Guide participated in a conference call with the Corps of Engineers. Bottom line is that evaluation of the lock damage and the development of the repair plan is underway. Dewatering of the lock is scheduled for this week or next, weather dependant. No time schedule was provided for how long repairs will take or how long the lock will be out of operation. Waterway Guide will continue to monitor the situation.
The next update will be Friday, January 26, 2024.
1/16/2024:
Notice is given to mariners that Demopolis Lock will be closed to traffic for emergency repairs to the upper miter gate starting 16-JAN-2024. The Corps of Engineers is diligently working to analyze the extent of the damage and make necessary repairs; however, a schedule has not been determined to when the repairs will be completed, and lock reopened. A follow-up notice to navigation will be issued once more information becomes available.

The current estimate for repairs to be completed is 30 to 60 days. Equipment is expected soon to install the concrete logs on the upstream side so the lock level can be lowered. Once that happens a new estimate to complete repairs will be issued.View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer
